When you buy a school uniform, do you ever flip over the hang tag? Most people just glance at the fabric composition, see "65% cotton," and think that's good enough, then put it back down. But there's another line on that tag that a lot of people completely ignore "Safety category: Class B." Behind that line are three key indicators: formaldehyde content, pH value, and prohibited carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes. Today, we're going to break these three down in plain languagewhat they are, what happens when they exceed the limits, and how parents can spot problems.  

First, let's get clear: how are school uniform safety standards set? 

The safety indicators for school uniforms are mainly based on GB18401-2010 "National General Safety Technical Code for Textile Products." This standard divides textiles into three categories:

l Class A: Products for infants and toddlers the strictest requirements, formaldehyde 20 mg/kg

l Class B: Products that come into direct contact with skin school uniforms fall into this category

l Class C: Products that do not come into direct contact with skin the most lenient requirements 

School uniforms are worn against the skin every day, so they must meet Class B requirements. GB/T31888-2015 "School uniforms for primary and secondary school students" explicitly states this. What exactly does the Class B standard regulate? Mainly three things: formaldehyde content, pH value, and prohibited carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes.

1. Formaldehyde content: the invisible "silent killer" 

Let's start with formaldehyde. 

Where does formaldehyde in textiles come from? During dyeing and finishing, fabrics are treated with various auxiliariesanti-wrinkle agents, colour fixatives, anti-shrink agentsmany of which contain or produce formaldehyde. The more the manufacturer uses, and the less thoroughly they process it, the more formaldehyde remains on the fabric. 

The Class B standard requires formaldehyde content 75 mg/kg. As a product that directly contacts skin, school uniforms must meet this limit. 

What are the dangers of excessive formaldehyde? 

l The most direct effect is skin irritation. Formaldehyde damages the skin's barrier function, causing redness, itching, and rashes. Children with sensitive skin are especially vulnerable. 

l Next is respiratory irritation. Formaldehyde volatilizes and is inhaled, which can cause coughing and throat discomfort. Long-term exposure carries even more serious health risks. 

How can you tell? Smell itthat's the simplest method. If a new uniform has a pungent odour when you open the packagesomething like glue or formalinbe alert. Uniforms from legitimate manufacturers are thoroughly washed or aired out before shipment to reduce free formaldehyde to safe levels. Once you get a new uniform, wash it before wearing washing effectively reduces residual free formaldehyde on the fabric. 

2. pH value: the culprit that destroys the skin's "protective film" 

The pH indicator isn't familiar to many people, but it's directly related to your child's skin health. 

The surface of human skin is slightly acidic, with a pH of roughly 5.5 to 7.0. This mildly acidic environment is the skin's natural barrier, helping to defend against bacterial invasion. During textile production bleaching, dyeing, finishing acids or alkalis are used. If the fabric isn't thoroughly rinsed and neutralised afterwards, acidic or alkaline residues remain on the surface. 

The Class B standard requires a pH value between 4.0 and 8.5. School uniforms must fall within this range. 

What are the dangers of a pH value that exceeds the limit?

If the pH is too high (alkaline), it destroys the skin's slightly acidic protective film, reducing the skin's resistance leading to dryness, itching, and even triggering allergies and infections. If the pH is too low (acidic), it can also irritate the skin, causing redness and a burning sensation.

There have been real cases. In 2018, a uniform factory in Guizhou recalled a batch of uniforms because the pH value of the red fabric exceeded the standard range of 4.08.5. These uniforms, worn directly against the skin, could have caused skin irritation in students.

How can parents tell? You can't smell a pH problem it requires lab testing. But keep an eye out for this: if your child complains of "itching" or "prickling" after putting on a new uniform, or develops unexplained rashes, consider whether the pH or formaldehyde levels might be too high.

3. Prohibited carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes: the red line you must not cross 

This is the most serious of the three indicators. 

Carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes are a class of dyes that can break down under certain conditions to release carcinogenic aromatic amines. These dyes are cheap and produce bright colours, so some unscrupulous manufacturers use them to save money. 

The national standard is very clear: they are banned. School uniforms must have zero detectable carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes. 

What are the dangers of exceeding the limit? 

When carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes are absorbed through skin contact, they may break down into carcinogenic aromatic amines during metabolism. Long-term accumulation increases the risk of cancer. This isn't a "just a little itching" problemit's a long-term health hazard. 

The good news is that after the "toxic uniform" incidents in 2013, regulatory inspections have become much stricter, and cases of detected carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes have dropped significantly. But parents still shouldn't let their guard downalways check the standard on the hang tag when buying uniforms, and look for "GB/T 31888-2015" and "GB18401-2010 Class B."

4. Colorfastness: dye that doesn't "move" means skin that doesn't suffer 

Besides the three "chemical indicators" above, there's another equally important physical indicatorcolorfastness. 

What is colorfastness? In plain terms, it's how well the colour holds up under stress. Washing, sweating, rubbing, sunlightthese everyday scenarios test how firmly the dye is bonded. Uniforms with poor colour fastness fade after a few washes, and when you sweat, the dye transfers onto your skin. 

GB/T 31888-2015 has specific requirements for colour fastness: 

l Colour fastness to washing, perspiration, water, dry rubbing, and light/perspiration composite: not less than grade 3-4

l Colour fastness to wet rubbing: not less than grade 3

l Colour fastness to light: not less than grade 4 

What are the dangers of substandard colour fastness? 

Dye molecules that come off can be absorbed through the skin. Some dyes contain heavy metal ions, and long-term exposure may affect health. Plus, faded colours look worn, and they can stain lighter undergarmentsand those stains won't wash out. 

How can parents quickly check? Rub the fabric with a white damp cloth. If it leaves obvious colour after just a few rubs, the colorfastness is likely substandarduse with caution. Also, a little loose colour on the first wash of a dark uniform is normal, but if it keeps bleeding colour after several washes, there's a problem.

5. What can parents do? Three practical steps 

Now that we've covered these indicators and their dangers, what can parents actually do? Three steps: 

l Step 1: Flip the hang tag and check three things. First, look for "GB/T 31888-2015" as the execution standard. Second, check that the safety category says "Class B." Third, make sure there's a complete manufacturer name and address. If any of these three are missing, be suspicious.

l Step 2: Smell it and feel it. Open the package and sniff for any unusual odoursmusty, petrol-like, fishy, or aromatic hydrocarbon smells are all red flags. Touch the fabricrough or scratchy textures might indicate a problem. 

l Step 3: Wash before wearing. Once you get a new uniform, always wash it once before letting your child wear it. Washing effectively reduces residual free formaldehyde and loose colour, and it helps neutralise the fabric's acidity/alkalinity. This is the simplest and most effective protective measure. 

One last honest word 

Formaldehyde, pH, carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes these terms may sound scary, but the truth is that the state has already drawn clear red lines around them. GB18401-2010 Class B and GB/T31888-2015 are two protective moats. Uniforms that meet these national standards have these indicators under control. 

The problem lies with products that don't meet the standardsthose made by small workshops with no proper hang tags and suspiciously low prices. To cut costs, these uniforms use cheap dyes and auxiliaries, and they skimp on thorough washing and neutralisation. The result: excessive formaldehyde, outofrange pH, and poor colour fastness. 

 

So what parents need to do is actually quite simple: look for the national standard, read the hang tag, and wash before wearing. Follow these three rules, and your child's uniform safety is basically guaranteed.
